Loved
Matthew 3:13-17
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Loving Lord, I know that I am unlovable and yet you love me.
Yet sometimes I tell myself that if I work hard for you and seek to serve you as best as I possibly can, then you’ll love me, or will love me more.
But you already love me as much as you possible can! You’ve got no love still to give me because you’ve already given it all.
Can I dare to imagine that when you said to Jesus, ‘You are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased’ that blessing extends even to me?
Knowing that you love me completely, free me from the sense of having to earn your love that I might more fully respond to your call and to go as you send me into the world to serve as you deserve.
In Jesus’ name,
AMEN.
