Love is not rude
Listen to this daily worship
1 Corinthians 13:5, Proverbs 18:13 (NIVUK)
(1 Corinthians 13) 5 It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
(Proverbs 18) To answer before listening –
that is folly and shame.
This really is just about basic consideration of other people.
The old advice to think before you speak — ‘Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?’ is as relevant as ever. Of course some people can take offence at quite innocently meant remarks, but there are also people who pride themselves on speaking bluntly, regardless of others’ feelings.
Still with the trivia of daily life – the other day I stood aside at the end of an aisle in the supermarket to let someone pass. Another three people followed her, not one of them glanced at me or said thank you. I might charitably think they were preoccupied by remembering the carrots or calculating the price increases, but it was a bit sad.
A wee smile doesn’t cost anything extra.
Then again, on a different scale, is it possible to speak truth to power politely? Discuss!
PRAYER:
God of love,
God of the love which notices other people,
and considers their feelings,
even in difficult situations,
teach us to love ourselves and others,
giving proper respect and worth to all your people.
