John 13: 34-35 (NIV)
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
A song from the Lloyd Webber Musical ‘Aspects of Love’ declares:
“Love, love changes everything,
How you live and how you die…
Love will turn your world around,
And that world will last forever…
Yes love, love changes everything
Nothing in the world will ever be the same.”
When Jesus first called his disciples, he said simply, “Follow me”. Following would lead to a lifetime of learning and growing. Before he went to the cross, Jesus taught his friends that following meant loving, with a particular form of love. The Greek word is “agape” and means the love which is self-sacrificing. As what Jesus has done for us sinks in, we discover that this is a love which changes our whole way of thinking. This is heavenly love. This love is from God. This is the love which changes everything.
Prayer:
Lord, I thank you that you are a loving, gracious God, who offers forgiveness and the gift of new life. Thank you that your love is perfect. I know that my love can never reach such heights. I ask only that you will lead me, and that the power of your love will fill my life, that I may honour you and love my neighbour as you desire me to. Amen.
