Jeremiah 28:8-9 (NRSVA)
8 The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.’
Oh how quick we are
to hear words of doom and gloom
to devour the scaremongering
and regurgitate fear
And in the feeding frenzy of catastrophe
we are slow to pick up on
the whispered words of peace
that weave their way wraithlike
through the chaotic cacophony that sells news.
Caught up in the thick of it
we rarely step back far enough
out of the melee
into the shallows
where the calmer, gently lapping waves
soothe and console
and set up a rhythm
that comforts the soul
dispensing healing balm
on troubled spirits
creating space
for peace to emerge.
Enable us O God
to discern your voice of peace
amidst the noise of conflict
And to follow you along the paths of peace.
