2 Corinthians 5: 17 (NRSVA)

17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

At the heart of everything Jesus taught was a profound belief in the re-birth of humanity. His teaching on re-birth was nothing like re-incarnation. It was all about discovering your true personhood through the power of the Holy Spirit. He talked a lot about dying to self in order to become alive in God. The Apostle Paul in his second letter to the Corinthians seeks to encourage the believers to understand that they have been given a new Spirit filled life, fulfilling their unique identity, through which God is shaping them to live  so that they reflect the coming glory of the new creation. 80 generations on the message is still the same. It’s time to shake off that old life and allow the Holy Spirit to lift you high into God’s presence. The thing is it all starts with each of us the same way as with all the others we have talked about this week. When we find our self cross-gazing we are in the right place to encounter forgiveness and healing.

By My Side

Come up here

By my side

Jesus said

Be nailed to your cross

Be lifted high

So that you will see

An eternal view

And recognise your new life

It’s hard

It’s painful

Jesus said

To die to self

To be ridiculed

And mocked

To see people gamble for your clothes

But look beyond this moment

See what you are becoming

Part of a new creation

Look the old and the shabby self

Is passing away

See the new thing is emerging

It’s time

To go back down

Jesus said

Into the bear pit

Where snakes and scorpions move

Jesus said

See I’ve breathed my Spirit

Into the world

You will never be alone

Go among the mockers and the scoffers

The sinners and the sinned against

The backbiters and the deceivers

Invite them to the foot of the cross

To gaze on the Father Love

Not gawk at a meaningless tragedy

Let them gaze and gaze and gaze

Until they hear love say

This is my body broken for you
