Romans 10: 14-21 (NRSVA)
14 But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’ 16 But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our message?’ 17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.
18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have; for
‘Their voice has gone out to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.’19 Again I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,
‘I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
with a foolish nation I will make you angry.’20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,
‘I have been found by those who did not seek me;
I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.’21 But of Israel he says, ‘All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.’
The Apostle Paul reminds us strongly here in his letter to the Romans that God uses people to do His work. How will people hear the good news of God without a spokesperson? This is the very same message that God gave to Moses. Despite the doubts and fears which assailed him on several occasions before God’s people were finally set free, Moses accepted the call to action. Moses had to go in order for the people to hear and be delivered from slavery. His experience at the burning bush gave him the strength he needed to fulfil his mission.
Do you ever imagine that you are in this world just for an uncomplicated, unchallenging life? That’s what Moses may have hoped for. The thought of living peacefully by the desert and mountains until the day he died. But God had greater plans.
Sometimes our own plans and dreams will not be the right direction for us. God has a plan for you, and there may be more in store for you than you imagined.
What is your burning bush experience? Is God speaking to you today, through a person, a prayer, an unexpected message or event? Is God’s voice calling out to you to serve Him? Moses shows us that God can reach us wherever we are and calls whomever He chooses. Are you listening for Him? We are simply commissioned to go. 80 generations on, and the need is still as great.
PRAYER:
Lord, how we love you, that you have already gone before us. We love that you have already paved the way. We love that when we step out in obedience, you promise to continue to be with us, and you will walk beside us. Thank you for the promise that you will never leave us nor forsake us. Even if we don’t know every detail as to why you are leading us in new directions, thank you that we can stay close to you, knowing you will guide us. Amen.
