The Joy that Flows from the Peace
Listen to this daily worship
John 20: 19-20 (NRSVA)
19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
It’s evening, all the doors are locked, the disciples fear for their lives. There is no peace to be found. The room is filled with an uneasy tension between those who believe and those who would like to believe. Rumours of his resurrection abound but only a few have actually seen him.
Suddenly a calm peace filters through the evening air and Jesus is there among them. His familiar voice, laughing eyes and ‘told you so’ character traits, say it all. Joy emerges through the pain and laughter fills the room. Coming to terms with the new order of things doesn’t happen over night it happens by encounters.
PRAYER:
Lord,
Of Sorrow and Joy
Carrying scars pierced by spear and nail
A memorial of redemption
engraved blemishes in the hands of God
You take earth into heaven
From a cross shaped view
Unknown to angel eyes
The joy of heaven
Endured the pain
Healing wounded sinners
Unnoticed to a broken world
