John 2: 6-8 (NRSVA)

6 Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it.

And because he loves people, he enjoyed big gatherings of people where he could spend hours listening.

Can you imagine Jesus joining a debate between Celtic, Rangers, Hibs, and Hearts fans to determine whether Covid restrictions at football games are legit? Well, yeah. I can.

If it’s important to you, it’s important to Him. And he’ll gladly participate.

For this very reason, He happily accepted the invite to the wedding at Cana with his friends and family.

Jewish weddings went on for days and copious amounts of wine would be consumed. In a culture where hospitality was widely accepted as a primary cornerstone of society, running out of food or drink at a wedding would undoubtedly taint a family’s reputation for the long run.

It would damage their honour and shame them publicly.

Again, Jesus is finely tuned and sensitive to the levels of anxiety around him and simply says: ‘Fill the jars with water.’

When you do the math, the total amount of ceremonial water turned into wine was in the region of 700 litres.

Wow.

That’ll keep ‘em going!

Isn’t this fascinating? That the very first miracle Jesus performs is something subtle. To protect a newlywed couple and their families. To save them the agony of months and years of dispute as to who was responsible for the back-up wine.

How often is God still at work behind the scenes to protect us from things we’re wholly unaware of? Saving us multiple times through the day from embarrassment, hurt or sorrow.

If we had the ability to tick boxes for every miracle we encounter daily, we’d easily run out of paper.

Mark Batterson in his book, The Grave Robber, puts it like this:

"Don't just seek miracles. Seek Jesus. And if you seek Jesus, miracles will find you."

PRAYER:

Lord, thank you for the miracle of life,

For all the miracles that form my life,

For the daily seen, and unseen miracles.

Make me more aware of the greatest miracle of all:

Your presence in and with me.
