An invitation to the earth to worship
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 96: 7-9 (NRSVA)
7
Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.8
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering, and come into his courts.9
Worship the Lord in holy splendour;
tremble before him, all the earth.
Our theme this month has got me thinking of all the ways we communicate, and recently I found out about a special event through receiving a beautiful invitation. It was so beautiful, the textured ivory paper, the edges deckled and hand finished, a tiny watercolour picture, overprinted with the event and the time and date. It was beautiful. This was to be a special event. But it prompted in me thinking about the invitation to God. How does it feel to receive an invite into his presence, and what does it look like.
This part of Psalm 96 is a portion of that invite. It adds together with others to give us a flavour. It talks about entering his courts, it tells us about our gifts and offerings we should bring, it vividly captures his splendour and majesty, and even the trembling of our whole bodies as we stand before him. His power and awe on full display. It makes me yell in unbelief, ‘I was invited! I’m so happy to be here!’ How wonderful to be in his courts of praise? Do you feel that still? Did you once feel it but not now?
Either way, there’s a letter waiting to be opened. Go get it and RSVP.
Prayer:
Lord you have invited me.
You have invited me.
You have invited me.
You have invited ME
You have invited ME
I will spend forever here
In your presence
in your splendour
in your courts of praise
ascribing greatness
and glory to your name
Amen.
