Indwelt by the Divine

1 Corinthians 3:16,17 6:19, 20

1 Corinthians 3:16,17

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19, 20

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;  you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

The way in which we regard God’s creation begins with the way in which we regard each other, and equally our own physical being. Here Paul speak first of the whole community as God’s temple, then of the physical body of each person as God’s temple – the place where God dwells.

Gracious God, you breathe your Spirit into all things

and so all things are holy, all things are yours.

We marvel at what it means to be indwelt by the divine,

we long to become more aware of your presence

in us and in our neighbour, and to reverence you there.

May our living today be worthy

of those who are your dwelling place.

May we realise the sacredness of the whole creation

and so may we learn respect, care and compassion

for each other, for ourselves and for all that exists.

May we show ourselves good stewards

of all that is yours. Amen.
