I’m not giving up
Matthew 25: 44-46
That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? Luke 24 13-16
44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Lord,
When I read this story
I can’t help thinking about the times,
we’ve walked together,
talked together
laughed together and I haven’t recognise you.
Then I think about the times
I’ve past you by.
Ignored you.
Even despised you.
Perhaps out of ignorance.
Out of fear.
Out of self preservation.
Forgive, my self centre attitude.
Open my eyes to see the new thing you’re doing.
Give me a new perspective,
to recognise your Spirit at work in the world around me.
Lord,
I don’t want to miss our next encounter.
Bear with me if I laugh a little more with others,
take longer to complete my daily tasks.
Even if in the end I still don’t recognise you
I’m not giving up
I’m sure you’ll never refuse an invitation to supper
Especially when bread and wine are on the table
