What if your life doesn’t look like Psalm 128?
Psalm 128: 1-2
1 Happy is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways.
2 You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you.
'What is done cannot be undone, but one can prevent it happening again. I don’t think of all the misery but of the beauty that still remains. Whoever is happy will make others happy too.' - Anne Frank
Is it reality, Lord, these words of Psalm 128?
The reality of another's experience
with whom we can sing in celebration
and while sharing in their joy
feel the pangs of longing and lack,
of desires and dreams as yet unmet?
Are we not fearing you enough or
walking fully in your ways?
Is it aspirational, Lord, these words of Psalm 128?
The aspiration of another possible world,
a world where all hopes and desires
are imagined to have come to pass,
a psalm sung like the African American spirituals,
'Freedom is coming, freedom is coming'?
Or were they not fearing you enough
or walking fully in your ways?
Or is it a promise, Lord, these words of Psalm 128?
A promise of hope in the midst of struggle
That 'all shall be well, and all shall be well and
all manner of things shall be well',
And that with the psalmist we sometimes praise
and we also sing songs of lament.
And we will fear and walk in faithful devotion
knowing that whatever happens all will indeed be well.
