Humility
Philippians 2: 1 – 4
“Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
The hymn says, “The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord,” so we will take it as read that all we pray for in and through the Church we do so in the name of Jesus.
We pray for a spirit of humility to prevail in all that is done in the name of the Church of Scotland
O God, known to us in Christ Jesus, keep us focussed on how he lived in humble obedience to your will. Let his example be an inspiration to us. Help us to seek not so much the attainment of our own high achievements, but the fulfilment of the purposes of God in and through us. How lovely it would be, Lord, if humility became a contagion and everybody became affected. Let all of us who are part of the Church of Scotland open our hearts and determine in our minds to act humbly for our Lord so that our importance diminishes as his increases.
Amen
