Guardians of the Spirit
John 7: 37-39
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
My son and I are great fans of the current Marvel series of action movies. The plots are invariably about the hero doing right and defeating the villains who are doing wrong. When I was his age Jesus was my action hero. Corny yes, but through the lens of a twelve year old it fitted my worldview perfectly.
Am I guilty as an adult of missing out Jesus? I suspect I am. Church can miss the essentials of the streams of living water of the Gospel. We inadvertently make Church too serious and complicated with other agendas getting in the way. I must remember, whatever my age, to become a ‘Guardian of the Galaxy’ by Jesus’ call to relate to God in love and in the manner by which we become right and live life.
Prayer
Lord, bring the relationship of love from my heart and plant it firmly in the voice and thoughts of my head. At times I try too hard to express the feelings of love by printing words that are unable to express what I feel.
Help me Lord to pursue the changes needed by working to mould the Church, not in our own image but in Yours. Let the creativity of Your Spirit shape a Church that finds expression in the human spirit through music and artistic endeavour illuminating the path You are guiding it towards. Amen.
