Fall awake!
Mark 13: 32-37
32 ‘But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35 Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36 or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.’
In recent years, I have become someone who (quite literally) ‘stops and smells the roses’. I delight in a scented flower, often insisting that whoever is with me also stops and has a sniff. At this time of year, it can be difficult to find a flower to smell. Yet, still we are bombarded by signs of life and hope, joy and expectation.
Autumn leaves glowing with majestic reds and yellows.
Migrating birds gathering and swooping together.
Celestial bodies glowing brightly on clear, crisp nights.
Dancing snowflakes meandering towards earth.
Musicians busking on busy city streets.
Laughter echoing around colourful Christmas shows.
We are always surrounded by signs of life and hope, joy and expectation, if only we were to take a moment...
Abundant God,
Every moment echoes with your creative spirit,
Joy resonates within the world around us;
May we rest in your presence
Of fading flowers
Falling leaves
Shining stars
Quiet tears
Radiant smiles;
May we rest in your presence
Fully aware of your glory and beauty
Accompanying us, each and every moment,
As we journey with you in expectant hope,
Amen.
