Encircling: community

Luke 5: 1 – 3

Once when he was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, the crowd was pushing in on him to better hear the Word of God. He noticed two boats tied up. The fishermen had just left them and were out scrubbing their nets. He climbed into the boat that was Simon’s and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Sitting there, using the boat for a pulpit, he taught the crowd.

Are there some foundational values which we share with all our brothers and sisters worldwide, regardless of creed, colour or culture? This week we will explore through scripture and prayer some of the foundational values true to the Christian life and community: belonging, encircling, trusting, celebrating, accepting, challenging, letting go….

Encircling God: when the crowds are too strong, when the belonging is overwhelming, help us to push out into deeper water.

Remind us that we do not need to go alone – but that in you, and in our close companions, we can find solace, community. And show us that it is in the moving out and the moving in, that we discover a deeper sense of belonging in community, encircled in your love.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
