Luke 1: 5 - 7

In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren.

“How long, O Lord?” the psalmist cries;
A cry of despair and longing,
Of helplessness
Of desperation.

Sometimes I echo that cry,
The time of waiting seems too long to be borne
The hope of realization too fragile to survive
My faith too weak in the face of fulfilment delayed.
“How long, O Lord?”
The light of my anticipation grows dim
The joy of my hopefulness withers

I pray – in faith for a miracle
I work – out of faith to open the way for the kingdom
I submit – with faith in your will, yet in all my weakness and frailty
I persevere – through faith in your promise

Yet heaven is silent
The future is dark
My longing unsatisfied.

“How long, O Lord?”
When will you answer?

Will you answer?
