Dust me down Lord
Mark 1: 16-20
As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.
When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Jesus came to save the whole world and decided to choose some friends to help him in that task.
Were they the brightest and the best? Were they carefully selected candidates to be Jesus’ Apprentices? High calibre, high-flying successful types ready to give their all to his cause?
Nope.
They were ordinary guys – working men in the main, used to using their hands.
When Jesus was looking for a team to pass on his teachings to: a team to follow in his footsteps and carry on his mission after he was gone, he chose people who themselves, had no idea they might have what it took to become Saints.
They didn’t always listen.
They didn’t always understand.
They were sometimes a bit slow on the uptake and at other times went careering off down the wrong track at a fantastic rate of knots.
They put their foot in it.
Got a hold of the wrong end of the stick.
But Jesus trusted them still, with is message and his mission.
So surely he can use you.
And me?
Dust me down, Lord.
Set me off again.
Reign me in when I head off in the wrong direction.
Forgive me when I get it wrong.
But use me just as you used your first followers.
Teach me.
I want to try to do what you ask.
For you.
Knowing you deserve far more
But smile with pleasure at my attempts.
Smile on, Lord and help me to keep trying. Amen
