Come, Holy Spirit
Acts 2: 1-4
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Gathered together
In anticipation
In obedience
In trepidation
In fear
How often have we gathered together with little expectation
of your Spirit breaking in, O God?
Yet break in she does
Sweeping away our complacency
and our lacklustre attempts at worship
to confound and amaze
to enlighten and engage
to challenge and confront
Breaking in
with exuberance and joy
that refuses to be contained
but bubbles up
and overflows
affecting everything in her path.
Surprising the world with joy
so that nothing can ever be the same again
as the Spirit continues to blow where she will.
May we gather together with expectation, O Lord
And may our wildest imaginations be confounded
by the outpouring of your unpredictable Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, Come.
