Hebrews 12: 1-3 (NRSVA)

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.

At some point today, get a pencil and a piece of paper. Then draw a cloud and in that cloud write the names of people who have nurtured you, discipled you, trusted you, inspired you, taken risks with you, led you by example, invested in you – you get the picture? Next, look at those names and give thanks to God for your very own “cloud of witness,” people who have loved you and stood with you, as you have made mistakes and grown in faith. These folks, along with the host of heaven, the communion of saints, and the body of Christ, stand with you in all your endeavours so, “do not grow weary or lose heart!” Every day intentionally notice your cloud of witnesses, for this is a source of profound encouragement. Keep on going, persevere, and remember that Christ Jesus is also part of this cloud of witnesses who are for you, and He will give you all you need to keep loving, serving and following Him.

PRAYER:

Eternal God, thank You for surrounding us with our own cloud of witnesses as well as all those who have gone before us. Thank You that we are never isolated, that our call is to communion with You and others made in Your image. Amen.

Lent Disciplines

Each day this week make time to say a short prayer for those feeling sorrow, who feel isolated or alone. How can you be part of making the world a kinder pace this week?
