John 6: 25-27 (NRSVA)
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ 26 Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’
What a question! Hungry pastors
long for people to enquire;
yet round the Master people gather,
friend and foe; they frame and fire
their hopes and fears, anxieties
that flutter under every Saltire,
every label, every flag.
What a question! Hungry people
meet a Lord who bakes the bread,
fresh from God’s eternal oven,
gives it so dumb fans are fed
the food that lasts a lifetime, and
the word that frees our souls, instead
of tat that brings the devil’s price tag.
It’s amazing what people will do to spruce up their lives. It's amazing how folk will seek fame, often at great cost to pocket and principles. So many questions, such diligent searching. We sometimes say, glibly, all you need is to seek Jesus. That’s true, but (as in verses 25 and 26) Jesus seldom answers the questions we bring; instead, he points us in new directions.
PRAY:
Father God, you set the seal of your Spirit upon your Son, he told us. So help us to give him proper place in our lives, in our thinking and in our doing. Where we deal with food or money, may we do it in the light of heaven; and where we deal with the things of heaven, may this affect the food and money of this world, for your name’s sake. Amen.
