Psalm 72: 15-16 (NRSVA)

15

Long may he live!
    May gold of Sheba be given to him.
May prayer be made for him continually,
    and blessings invoked for him all day long.

16

May there be abundance of grain in the land;
    may it wave on the tops of the mountains;
    may its fruit be like Lebanon;
and may people blossom in the cities
    like the grass of the field.

The movement of God’s mission isn’t just across miles and borders, this movement can be small, delicate, even personal. Verse 16 of Psalm 72 calls for people to blossom. Did you know you are intended to blossom? I’m not sure I did.

God did though!

God knows all about blossoming, God who has delighted in the growing of every tree and flower on this earth every day forever. Yes God knows about blossoming and God knows about you.

God knows that you were born to blossom into yourself, to open up one bit at a time into your place in the world. God knows that you will be a unique and wonderful blossom full of new colour combinations, new thoughts, ideas and eccentricities.

I wonder, what can you do to help yourself blossom? Why not ask yourself: am I watered and fed? Have I got enough air and sunshine in my life to grow and open up? Am I rooted and connected in God and my community?

God longs for us to blossom along with the universe and to blossom into our communities. Do you know someone who forgets to give themselves room to blossom? Perhaps you can encourage them too, maybe even finding ways to blossom alongside each other.

Prayer:

Dear God of blossoming

Thank you that you know us and love us

Thank you that even though you delight in the whole universe

You take time to delight in our world and in us

Amen
