Blessed and blessing
Luke 1: 39-45
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 Soon afterward Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea. 40 She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and said in a loud voice, “You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord's mother comes to visit me? 44 For as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness. 45 How happy you are to believe that the Lord's message to you will come true!”
At first I was ‘deeply troubled’ -
now I am ‘in trouble’ –
should I not be ashamed?
hiding away?
Well, I have taken myself away for a while,
to my cousin Elizabeth’s.
But she is pregnant too –
shocked she was,
for herself, at her age –
but all she said was that she was honoured by my visit.
honoured!
by my visit!
So we had a wee hug.
And a wee greet.
And here we are, both rejoicing –
blessed and blessing!
This doesn’t seem like the right reaction at all.
The respectable people are tutting.
But my heart praises the Lord;
my soul is glad because of God my Saviour.
For there is nothing that God cannot do.
That’s what the angel said.
And God isn’t doing this for the ‘respectable’ people,
who sniff
and look down on the likes of me.
He is doing it for the likes of me.
And maybe,
just maybe,
one day,
the ‘respectable’ people will understand,
and be glad too.
