Ephesians 6:14 (NRSVA)

14 Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness.

The ‘belt of truth’ is the first of the items of the Roman soldier’s uniform that Paul uses to describe our uniform for following Jesus. Maybe if I had been writing it, I would have concentrated on the offensive weapons in the kit. Yet, the majority of the pieces of the armour of God are to protect the precious person inside it, and remind them of their true identity in God.

The belt of truth gives support to the waist, the central zone of the body. Reminding us that what enables us to stand at all is holding on to what is right and true, what has integrity.

God describes himself as ‘I, the Lord, speak the truth. I declare what is right.’ (Isaiah 45: 19)

Jesus describes himself as ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life’ (John 14:6) and the Holy Spirit as ‘the Spirit of truth’ (John 14:16).

I own a couple of leather belts which each do the job of gathering in clothing around the waist. The first belt is stamped throughout with holes which weaken the structure. The second is made from three plaited strands which reminds me of the verse in Ecclesiastes 4:12 ‘A cord of three strands is not easily broken.’ How much stronger is the belt of truth gifted to us by Father, Son and Spirit.

Is there anywhere in your life where God is calling you to speak Truth as an act of love?

PRAYER:

O Three in One God,

Buckle your truth with love round my waist.

Strengthen my spine and enable me, with supernatural ease,

To defend against rocks that would stone me dead.

Rocks of untruths, pebbles of lies, Slivers of slanderous slurs and chunks of small-minded traps

That the Evil One trundles and stacks around this hallowed ground where I stand.

I stand as dust particles, inhabited with the breath of God, life passed from Adam down the line.

And more than that – gifted with a new life endowed by the Spirit’s breath.

Buckle your Truth around my waist,

And set me free – to dance unhindered in Your Light.
