Belonging
Isaiah 43: 2-4
Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name you are mine.
When you pass through the waters I will be with you;
when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.
Since you are precious and honoured in my sight, and because I love you.
Fear not; O! God you tell me not to fear but my heart is filled with fear and at the same time a yearning to belong to you.
You who created all things, I long to know you but you seem so far away.
“I have summoned you by name” You say you know me and have summoned me by name!
Then you promise to be with me when life threatens to overwhelm me and drown me.
The fear of not belonging is less penetrating, it’s as if you God are really convincing me that
I belong to you.
Lord, I still fear the fires of the hard part of living, when nothing goes right.
How can I belong when that happens? When I want to run from you and hide from my own feelings.
Yet, you, the God of all creation reach out to me, promising that the flames of life will not set me ablaze.
Then you tell me that you love me.
Thank you that you have given me life allowing me to live, and that you not only like me, but love me!
In Your love Lord is my belonging, my fear I willingly give you as an offering and in the giving I know I belong to you. Amen.
