I Believe in Angels
Listen to this daily worship
Luke 1: 11-13 (NRSVA)
11 Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him. 13 But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.
I wonder what went through his mind as he stood there lifting the prayers of the people into the presence of Almighty God. We know for certain that what happened next was something he had never expected.
This is no empty ritualistic priestly game. He finds himself being written into the salvation story of all humanity as heaven stands beside him. His prayers are being heard not simply for this one time and place but his prayers are at the centre of a cosmic breakthrough.
He is told not to be afraid, his elderly wife would bear a son, his name would be John, he would be a prophet pointing a generation to the Messiah. Hearts were going to be changed, won over. The most rebellious of people would turn towards God. No wonder he was speechless, told off by an angel who could read his unbelieving heart.
PRAYER:
Lord
Forgive our unbelieving hearts
How easily we dismiss thoughts of revival
When we meet the messengers of hope
We nod in silent disbelief
Forgive the cynicism of old age
Open our eyes and our hearts
That we might see beyond our disappointments
To your coming glory
Forgive our spiritual blindness
Give us the courage to start to prepare
To lay the foundation for your coming Kingdom
Even now in this our generation
Forgive our doubt — increase our faith
Lord
This is our chance of a lifetime
Open our mouths that we might name the change
