Appetite
Listen to this daily worship
Matthew 5: 13 (NRSVA)
13 ‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.
Jesus lived in one part of the world, but he entrusted it all to his followers. Jesus was a first-century carpenter, but he has entrusted this 21st century planet to us today. The earth needs the salt of discipleship now as never before. (Or should we also say as ever before?) And to borrow a phrase from Eugene Peterson, it needs pick and shovel prayers.
Can our salt lose its taste? There is nothing so sad as finding an older person who once was keen for Christ, but has lost their hunger for worship and witness, who no longer has any passion to see and make a difference in how the world is.
Prayer:
God, in your mercy defend us
from losing appetite for good things to happen
from losing the flavour of the kingdom
from losing our hunger for change
from losing readiness to obey right now
and in your grace, feed us with such bread from heaven that we keep our witness salty. Amen.
