Romans 16: 2 (NRSVA)

2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.

Paul instructs the Romans to give Phoebe any help she may need. I wonder how far they will go to help her?

My Mum and Dad still talk about the help we received as a family from a church in Tiree, over 30 years after the event.

We had been camping on Tiree for a couple of weeks in the summer of 1988. It was a glorious holiday. One Sunday we had walked to the church to attend the service. Nearer to the end of the holiday there was a huge storm and our tent was blown away. Initially we took shelter in the toilet block and the next morning went to the ferry terminal. Because of the storm there wouldn't be a ferry for a couple of days but the harbour master let us stay at the ferry terminal. Unknown to us, the people at the church had been searching for us worried something had happened to us in the storm. Word must have got around the island about the wee family stuck at the ferry terminal with nothing as the folk from the church came down with supplies to keep us going. We had food and blankets. Someone even brought down a black and white TV for us to watch! God bless these wonderful Christian men and women who helped our wee family when we were most in need.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit,

Open the eyes of my heart and help me to be like Phoebe and see where there is need today.

Motivate me to action,

to be the love and healing of our Lord Jesus

Amen
