Psalm 96: 1-2 (NRSVA)

O sing to the Lord a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
    tell of his salvation from day to day.

I remember travelling with my friend Paul, and I had my music blasting out of his car. I’d connected by Bluetooth and he was happy for me to play DJ for the duration. We sung together so loudly, and the words of the hymns filled the car. But we saw a diversion sign, and ended up having to find our way through all these closed roads. Paul said to me, ‘Turn that music down, so I can see where I’m going!’

It made me laugh at the time, but I understand what he meant. Music is all consuming. Especially when we praise! When we sing to God, it’s not just another karaoke hit, it’s like releasing the first breaths of dawn, where each word rises, alive with possibility, and filled with prayer. When we sing to God we’re not just singing words, but we’re offering our souls deepest and most intimate reflections.

Sing to the Lord a new song, the Psalmist says. It’s our offering he loves. It’s like a home-made gift and God loves when we give him those heart gifts. He likes to see us capture in song, his endless love, his new mercies, his timeless majesty. So friends, keep singing new songs, in new ways, in new words, in renewed love for the God who listens to them without distraction.

Prayer:

Lord teach me to sing new songs
Teach me words with purpose
Give me a heart that’s open
to beat out beats for you.
Amen.
