John 15: 9-11 (NRSVA)
9 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.
Living in Scotland recently has meant dealing with storms and the aftermath of them, and this got me thinking.
When the storms of life subside we are left looking at what has been left behind. Some things have been moved about, uprooted or even destroyed. Sometimes things we have held dear for generations are left beyond repair. Sometimes things we treasure closely have been lost.
In the space which is left, as the rivers of life begin to flow more quietly again, we find we are in great need of love.
Know that God loves you.
Know that God mourns your treasures with you.
Know that God will help you to build new things for this new time: the time after the storm.
PRAYER:
Dear God through the storms,
We know that life can’t always be smooth sailing
Hold tight to us as we weather the storms
Be with us as we discover what this new phase of life will bring
Keep us safe in the knowledge of your love, whatever the weather
Amen
