A tradition of swimmers

Matthew 4: 17 (NRSVA)

17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’

John would go ahead of Him to prepare the way. And hundreds of years earlier, a light promised to those in darkness. Jesus, full divinity and humanity, was grafted in to people and to prophecy.

The prayer life is far from Star Trek. We don’t boldly go (or go boldly, if you prefer) where no one has gone before. No, we too are grafted in. This gift of relationship with God cultivated in prayer is given freely, generously, to all people of all ages in all times. Can you imagine it? My own prayer joins with that of Elizabeth, of Paul, of the desert fathers and mothers, of the sparkliest theologians ever known, of dear, familiar zealous prayer warriors (perhaps, like mine, your list is countless), of persecuted Christians who pray in secret, of my children and their children’s children and absolutely everyone else who jumps right in and swims deep.

How that thought energises me as I swim on!

Prayer:

Father

Thank You for all who pray. Thank You for the prayer of those who have gone before us — would that we would learn from them. Be with those who, even now, pray in fear and uncertainty, and remind them that they are not alone. Strengthen and equip those whose prayers are newly formed, or faltering. Would that our prayers rise to You as incense, in Jesus’ name and for Your glory. Amen
