A Good Meal Shared
Ecclesiastes 8:15
So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany him in his work all the days of the life God has given him under the sun.
….In a very few minutes everyone was drawing up their stools…and preparing to enjoy themselves. There was a jug of creamy milk for the children and a great big lump of deep yellow butter in the middle of the table from which everyone took as much as he wanted to go with his potatoes……. And when they had finished the fish Mrs Beaver brought unexpectedly out of the oven a great and gloriously sticky marmalade roll, steaming hot…..and when each person had got his (or her) cup of tea, each person shoved back his (or her) stool so as to be able to lean against the wall and gave a long sigh of contentment. We planned a family picnic. Sandwiches and salad and crisps and fruit juice (wine or beer for the non-driving adults!) followed by sticky buns. We ate beside a stony burn in pale sunshine, well wrapped up against the unexpectedly cool June breeze. Lord it was the best feast ever - shared by three generations of the family. Tired from damming the burn or climbing the hill, filled with simple food, we leaned back against the rocks and gave long sighs of contentment. Thank you Lord for such shared moments.
We attended a Golden Wedding dinner. Four courses of beautifully prepared, exotically presented food, washed down with excellent wine [or fruit juice for the drivers and children]. Shared by three generations of the family it was a joyous evening. Thank you Lord for such shared moments.
With such memories to lean back on, help us to face the daily routines with greater contentment.
We gave thanks for the food and drink we shared those times. We prayed for those who seldom know such joys, asking that you show us what we can do to help this ill-divided world. Help us to hear your call so that all may someday come to know for themselves the sigh of contentment which follows a good meal shared.
