A Different Stillness
Matthew 6:6-8
But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door
and pray to your Father who is in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do;
for they think that they will be heard because of their many words.
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
How can we hear you,
if we won’t listen?
How can we be still,
if we won’t stop?
There is an invitation to step aside -
to pause,
to breath;
to let the competing thoughts
clamour their way to the surface –
then to let them go
and enter
a different,
deeper stillness.
There,
my words don’t have to be pretty –
all you ask
is honest longing
and a little attention.
God of the quiet room
bless us with a moment of silence this day –
there to find and bide awhile
in your peace.
Amen.
