Matthew 11: 28-30 (NIV-UK)

28 ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’

Handel’s Messiah in my head this time.

‘Come unto me’ played at yet another recent funeral, a particularly sad one, where it was of great comfort to think of the person released from his burdens.

We do all carry burdens of various kinds – guilt, anxiety, ill-health, overwork, exhaustion, the expectations and judgement of others.

‘Take it to the Lord in prayer!’

Go into the Library and search for Horatius Bonar’s well-loved hymn (CH4 540):

‘I heard the voice of Jesus say Come unto me and rest’

Lay your burdens down

and be comforted.

Prayer:

Loving God,

thank you that we can bring you all our troubles,

lay our burdens down

and be made glad.
