Romans 8: 6-11 (NRSVA)
6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed it cannot, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.
‘Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God!’ (Romans 8:6, The Message translation)
What an astounding thought! We’re not just going through the motions — God’s very Spirit is inside us, actively shaping us, breathing life into our everyday moments. Whether we are sorting the laundry, walking to the shops, or chatting at the bus stop, God’s Spirit is in us!
Without the Spirit, we are like flat dough, lifeless and unmoving. But, with the Spirit, we are like dough with yeast working in it — rising and full of life.
How amazing our God is! And how amazing life becomes with the Spirit in us!
Prayer:
God, our Master Baker,
thank you for your Spirit,
living and breathing in us,
shaping us, moving us,
in every moment, with every breath.
Thank you for filling us with life,
not just in the big things,
but in the small, ordinary moments —
sorting the recycling, laughing with friends,
preparing a meal.
Without you, we’d be flat, lifeless,
but with you, we rise —
full of hope, full of purpose,
alive in ways we can’t even imagine.
How amazing you are, Lord,
and how incredible life is with you in us.
Amen
What can I do? Pray for Saint Andrew’s Church, Colombo (the only Church of Scotland in the southern hemisphere) for its hot lunches for the poor mission project. The church is the active agent, bringing people together in remarkable ways: https://scotskirk.lk/mission-projects/
