Psalm 82 (NRSVA)
1
God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgement:2
‘How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?Selah3
Give justice to the weak and the orphan;
maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute.4
Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.’5
They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
they walk around in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.6
I say, ‘You are gods,
children of the Most High, all of you;7
nevertheless, you shall die like mortals,
and fall like any prince.’8
Rise up, O God, judge the earth;
for all the nations belong to you!
In November our dear friend and Sanctuary First contributor Linda Pollock passed away suddenly. Since her death I personally have struggled that within this earthly realm I will never speak with her again, never laugh together, never see her again. I miss her friendship, her wisdom and her encouragement.
Linda’s passing has made me think deeply about my relationships. How so often I’m too busy with ministry and work to spend quality time with the people that I love, whose friendship I value.
Reading this psalm I think what would God want of me in this situation? I think God would want me to honour my friendships by making time and being present with those who I love. To show them they are loved and cherished. We never know when it is the last time we will speak to someone.
Are there relationships you have neglected or been too busy to nurture? If so, reach out to them today!
Prayer:
Father God, thank you for the people we do life with.
Thank you for the friendships that sustain us.
Help us to make time for those we love,
To put being present and available before tasks
Amen
