Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV-UK)

9

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:

10

If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.

11

Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?

12

Though one may be overpowered,
    two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

There is an enduring fact that the writer in Ecclesiastes wants to share with us: We are never meant to live in this world on our own. When I was reading this, I couldn’t help but really meditate and picture in my mind the sheer illustration of what it means to live and to work with people all around you.

I love watching football games, and when I see a team perform so strongly, there is a part of me that just adores the ‘chemistry’ in full swing between the players. What would that be like if God were to allow us the time to find a ‘working chemistry’ in the Church? What would we witness if we intentionally sought to build bridges with someone whom we might find difficult or different? Team Sports need people; otherwise, they simply become ‘Sports’, and the Team bit becomes redundant.

In the Gospels, Jesus speaks, eats, drinks, listens, comforts, journeys and witnesses people. The Son of God himself, through his life, is showing us that even God wants the whole world to live with one another.

Let the unexpected moments of one falling, one being cold, one carrying too much of the burden, be those valuable spaces for how we can blend together as God’s own very creation to show to the whole world about what it means to live with one another and also to reflect the very heart of God, whose love is always drawing people together rather than pulling them apart.

Prayer:

Heavenly Lord, you made this wonderful world for us to enjoy in community. Help us never to take that for granted, and give us the wisdom to discern how you are calling us to walk alongside one another. When injuries occur, use us as agents of respite and recovery. When others are facing a change, help us to be bridges where there are barriers, peacemakers where there is division, and companions where there is loneliness. Make us one that sees the stranger or the other and calls them to be part of the team! Amen.
