Golden moment

Luke 2: 15-18 (NRSVA)
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ 16 So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.
God doesn’t make mistakes. He chose the shepherds deliberately. They are bold men. They need to be in order to stay out all night and protect the sheep from thieves and predators. Others might have been halted by fear after their encounter with the host of angels but not the shepherds. Because they are bold men full of courage they head down to Bethlehem to see what has happened that the Lord has told them about.
And after they see baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, they tell others about it. The Bible says that those who hear are amazed. People take notice because it is the shepherds telling them. These are practical men. If it was a spiritual person like me saying it the people might have been less likely to take notice. But because it is the shepherds, no-nonsense practical men who tell them, they are amazed.
This highlights the power of sharing our own stories of how God has been working in our lives. People who know us take notice and are inspired to seek that life transforming love of God for themselves.
Prayer:
Lord God,
Give me courage to share our story with others
Amen
